Air brake chambers are round metal containers, located at each wheel, where compressed air is converted into mechanical force to apply the brakes and stop the vehicle. There are two kinds of air brake chambers - service and spring brake chambers. A service brake chamber contains a flexible rubber disc called a diaphragm, a metal rod called a pushrod and a return spring. When you press the brake pedal, compressed air fills the service brake chamber, causing the diaphragm to move and push out the pushrod to apply the brakes (Diagram 3-1). When air pressure is released, the pushrod is returned to its original position by the spring inside the chamber (Diagram 3-2).
The pushrod and a lever - called a slack adjuster - link the brake chamber to the brake assembly (which contains the brake drum or disc). When you press the brake pedal, the pushrod extends farther from the brake chamber, moving the slack adjuster forward. The motion of the slack adjuster transfers to the brake assembly, causing the brake shoes or pads to make contact with the brake drum or disc.

Fleet maintenance is the process of keeping all of your organization’s vehicles in good working order so that they can be used safely and effectively. A good fleet maintenance program will focus on preventive maintenance so that issues never occur during the use of the vehicle
A fleet maintenance program also serves to lower the costs of repairs. For example, maintaining a vehicle’s engine might be expensive in the short term, but not so expensive as having to replace the entire engine (or the entire vehicle). Just like you shouldn’t neglect to change your personal car’s oil, you shouldn’t neglect your fleet either.
The fifth-wheel coupling provides the link between a semi-trailer and the towing truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly. The coupling consists of a kingpin, a 2-or-3 1⁄2-inch-diameter (50.8 or 88.9 mm) vertical steel pin protruding from the bottom of the front of the semi-trailer, and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle. As the connected truck turns, the downward-facing surface of the semi-trailer (with the kingpin at the center) rotates against the upward-facing surface of the fixed fifth wheel, which does not rotate. To reduce friction, grease is applied to the surface of the fifth wheel. The configuration is sometimes called a turn-table in Australia and New Zealand, especially if it is a rotating ball-race-bearing type. The advantage of this type of coupling is towing stability.
Some camper trailers also use a fifth-wheel configuration, with the coupling installed in the bed of a pickup truck as a towing vehicle; "fifth wheel" is therefore sometimes used as a synonym for such campers.
